In many remote villages, women and children walk for hours every day, covering long distances under the scorching sun to fetch water—often from contaminated sources. As a result, waterborne diseases claim countless lives, children miss out on education, and families remain trapped in cycles of poverty.
Statistics reveal that nearly three-fourths of rural Tanzanians responsible for fetching water are women and children. This burden not only endangers their health but also robs them of time—time that could otherwise be used for schooling or earning a livelihood.
But when a clean water project is implemented, the transformation is immediate and profound. Children return to school, families grow healthier, and communities begin to thrive.
The Hand-Dug Well Project in Kilombero District
Located in the Morogoro region, Kilombero District is home to over 582,000 people across 158,000 households, many of whom suffer daily due to severe water shortages.
To address this, SAFU FOUNDATION launched the Hand-Dug Well Project — a sustainable, community-driven initiative to provide clean water directly within reach.
When groundwater is accessible near the surface, a hand-dug well is one of the most effective solutions. Guided by water experts, and with the participation of local community members, we dig wells between 9 to 18 meters deep. We line the shaft with gravel to prevent collapse and install a natural filtration system for clean water flow.
Once completed, the well is sealed with a concrete cap, and a manual hand pump is installed, giving the community reliable access to clean, safe water.
